"The 3 Nanny Goats Gruff" holds my record for the shortest time between coming up with the idea and having a finished script. After a mishap with what would become "Washing Socks", I sat down to brainstorm ideas for something else and came up with a sketch of a goat and that led to this story. I had a script and was out sculpting the troll in under a week.

I shot Gruff with an Olympus C730 digital camera and assembled it with Stop Motion Pro. All the usual tricks for wire removal apply here, although I did a much better job modelling the troll's mouth so he is 100% natural. For the shot where the little one is looking up at the troll, the entire sky is composited in since I would have needed a huge backdrop.

I have come to realize that about half of any given audience doesn't get the ending. Hint: it's not about bestiality. Those that do seem to really like it. It's a delicate balance between being "in your face" obvious and putting it out there for people to discover. It's a risk I ran with "The First Vegetarian" as well.

The troll, named Ed for famed pink sweater lover Ed Wood, was my favorite voice to do and the daughters came through with very different voices to give each goat it's own personality. After the ASIFA-SF open screening, I heard several people saying, "Pay toll to da troll!" on their way out.
